Mortgage fraud victims come forward
Students at the Atlantic Bay Mortgage in Chesapeake are getting a valuable lesson on everything needed to know to buy home.
“What we try to stress is to educate yourself and ask questions,” said Dennis Brinck with Atlantic Bay.
These students are all getting ready to buy their first house. It can be an overwhelming process.
“Knowledge is power and the more knowledge you get, the less you will be taken advantage of,” Brinck added.
But being taken advantage of is what the state attorney general says two local companies have been doing to customers.
“I don’t mind giving my money to somebody,” said Virginia Beach resident Andrew Dick. “But to have it taken from me, that bothers me.”
Dick is a former police officer. He was one of dozes of victims to contact WAVY.com after seeing our story on Jason Gillentine of National Loan Modification Bureau. The attorney general says Gillentine broke the law in helping homeowners change the terms of their home loans. Dick says he gave Gillentine $1400 to get a fixed loan for a second home.
“He kept calling me over and over asking for money,” Dick added.
The modified loan never came through. Gillentine’s office is now closed and dozens of people are out thousand of dollars.
“I don’t feel it’s right and I know there’s a lot of other people out there who have gotten hurt by this guy,” Dick said.
